The Connection Between Mental and Physical Health
Understanding how your mind and body work together is central to overall well-being. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which over time elevates blood pressure, disturbs sleep, weakens immunity and increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Equally, chronic physical illness raises the risk of depression and anxiety. The good news is that the loop works in reverse too. Regular exercise is one of the most effective antidepressants known; a balanced diet stabilises mood and energy; and practices like yoga, breathing exercises and mindfulness measurably lower stress hormones. Treat mental and physical health as one system — looking after either one strengthens the other.
